Nervous System Regulation Therapy in Delray Beach, FL
Therapy for people whose alarm system will not stand down. Dr. Jennifer Rubolino works with adults in Delray Beach and across Florida who are functioning well and running hot underneath it.
When Your Body Stays Braced
You are not in danger and your body has not been told. You notice things before other people do.
You read a room in under a minute. You wake before the alarm with your jaw already tight, and you cannot remember the last time you sat down without a low hum of something needing attention.
None of this looks like a problem from the outside. You are performing well. That is often the reason it goes on for years.
Nervous system dysregulation is what happens when a threat response that was appropriate at some point stops switching off. The system is not broken. It is doing exactly what it learned to do, on a setting that made sense once and does not fit your life now.
What This Looks Like Day to Day
Most people arrive describing some combination of the following.
Sleep that comes eventually but does not restore anything. A body that produces symptoms your doctor cannot find a cause for. Constant low-level scanning of other people’s moods. Difficulty relaxing without something to take the edge off. Irritability that arrives faster than it used to. A startle response that embarrasses you. And a persistent sense of being tired in a way that a weekend does not touch.
Some people also experience it as health hypervigilance, where the scanning turns inward and every physical sensation gets examined for meaning.
The common thread is a system that has been running surveillance for a long time and does not know how to stop.
Why Understanding It Has Not Fixed It
Most of the people I work with on this can already explain it. They know about fight or flight. They have read about the vagus nerve. Some can describe their own history more accurately than a clinician could summarize it.
That is worth saying plainly, because it is the source of a specific frustration. When you are self-aware and it still happens, you lose the option of thinking you just need more information. You are left with the sense that you should be able to think your way out of this, and that failing to is a personal shortcoming.
It is not. Your nervous system does not process explanations. It updates through experience. You can know with complete clarity that you are safe and your body will keep insisting otherwise until it collects evidence of its own.
That gap between what you know and what your body does is not a failure of insight. It is a sign that the work needs to happen somewhere other than the level of understanding.
What the Work Involves
The goal is not calm. Calm is pleasant and it does not last, and chasing it usually becomes one more thing to manage. The goal is a system with more range, that escalates when it should and comes back down afterward.
In practice that means several things happening alongside each other.
We work with the physical state directly rather than only talking about it, because a body that has been braced for years does not release on the strength of a good conversation. Some of this happens in session, in real time, as it comes up.
We build genuine choice around the thoughts that come with it. There are two separate skills here. One is going into the thought on purpose, taking hold of it, examining what it is actually claiming, and shifting the angle. The other is recognizing the entrance to a spiral and deciding not to go in. Most people can learn both. What matters is that it stops being something that happens to you and becomes something you make a call about.
We also work on reading your own signals accurately, because a great many false alarms are emotion arriving physically and getting filed as danger. Learning to tell those apart removes a large share of them before they escalate.
And where it applies, we address where the setting came from. Sometimes that is trauma in the way people usually mean it. Often it is a childhood where staying alert was how you stayed ahead of trouble, and the alarm simply never got told the situation changed.
Related Concerns I Work With
Nervous system dysregulation rarely shows up on its own. It commonly appears alongside:
- Anxiety and chronic worry
- Burnout and exhaustion
- Health hypervigilance and symptom checking
- Trauma and its long-term effects
- Childhood emotional neglect
- Chronic illness and health-related stress
- Relationship patterns that keep repeating
- The inner critic and persistent negative self-talk
In couples work, a dysregulated nervous system in one partner shapes the whole cycle. What reads as withdrawal or overreaction is often a threat response arriving faster than either person can track. That is part of what couples therapy slows down.

About Dr. Jennifer Rubolino
Dr. Jennifer Rubolino is a licensed mental health counselor in Florida and North Carolina with a doctoral degree, certification in Emotionally Focused Therapy, and advanced training in AEDP, an experiential approach that works with emotion as it happens rather than talking around it.
Her approach is warm and direct. Sessions are clinically informed and feel like a real conversation. She works with people who are capable, self-aware, and stuck anyway, and much of her work is practical: teaching people what to actually do with what they already understand about themselves.
This is a private pay practice. Insurance is not billed directly. Contact for current fee information.

Frequently Asked Questions
It is therapy focused on the body’s threat response rather than only on thoughts and behavior. The aim is a nervous system with more range, one that activates when there is a reason and settles afterward, instead of staying switched on continuously.
Common signs include difficulty relaxing even when nothing is wrong, sleep that does not restore, a heightened startle response, constant scanning of other people’s moods, physical symptoms without a clear medical cause, and exhaustion that rest does not resolve. A consultation can help clarify whether this is what is happening.
They overlap and they are not identical. Anxiety describes the emotional experience. Nervous system dysregulation describes the underlying physical state driving it. Many people who have done anxiety treatment without lasting change find that the state itself was never addressed.
No. Trauma is one route to a sensitized threat response and it is not the only one. Chronic stress, a childhood spent monitoring an unpredictable environment, prolonged caregiving, and medical events all produce similar effects.
It varies with how long the pattern has been in place and what is maintaining it. Most people notice some change within the first several sessions, particularly in their ability to catch a spiral early. Durable change in the underlying state takes longer.
